Design

The e-tron arrived in 2019 as Audi’s first electric model, with its name being one that would be rolled out across its EV line-up. As it moves to be renamed the Q8 e-tron, Audi has reasserted its positioning at the top of its electric SUV market. Designed from the offset to be an upmarket, high-end EV, Audi has worked to build on that with this latest version.

On top of powertrain and design changes, Audi has also tweaked the dynamics of the model, improving the motors, chassis control systems and progressive steering – all helping to improve the way the Q8 drives.

The changes between the e-tron and Q8 e-tron aren’t significant, but there is a number of important differences between the two cars. Look closely and you’ll spot the new front-end design, incorporating a re-profiled grille and ambient exterior lighting, which is able to illuminate the grille. Various new wheel designs and colours are available, including Madeira Brown and Ultra Blue.

The Q8 e-tron is also the first new Audi to wear the brand’s new logo – an upgraded 2D version of the brand’s iconic Four Rings logo.

Tech

Audi has kitted the Q8 e-tron with all its latest technology, and a real highlight is the MMI touch response operating system. Featuring two large displays, the upper 10.1-inch display handles traditional media functions, while the 8.6-inch screen looks after the climate settings. Together, they replace nearly all conventional switches and knobs, while a 12.3-inch Audi Virtual Cockpit also acts as a high-tech digital instrument cluster.

The flagship Vorsprung also comes laden with additional features. There are digital mirrors to replace conventional door mirrors, while the digital Matrix LED headlights are able to mark the car’s position in the lane and help the driver remain securely in the centre in narrow spaces.

Engines & Performance

Audi is offering two powertrains on the Q8 e-tron, both of which have been upgraded compared to previously.

The ‘50 e-tron quattro’ setup kicks off the line-up, with its twin electric motors producing 335bhp and 664Nm of torque in boost mode, while a large 95kWh battery (of which 89kWh is usable) features, too.

Above this is the 55 e-tron, which gets more powerful motors that take the performance figures up to 402bhp and 664Nm of torque in the boost model, as well as a 114kWh battery (of which 106kWh is usable).

Statistics

Starting with the 50 e-tron model, this is able to accelerate from 0-60mph to 5.8 seconds*, and head on to a top speed of 124mph*. Audi also claims a range of between 272 and 283* miles on a charge, while also boasting a maximum charging speed of 150kW, allowing a 10 to 80 per cent charge to be completed in 28 minutes.

The key advantage of going for the 55 e-tron is its increased range, with Audi claiming between 319 and 333* miles from a charge. The increase in power is offset by the fact additional weight, though its 5.4-second* 0-60mph time still makes it the quickest model, while its top speed remains the same as 124mph*. It can handle a faster 170kW charging rate, with a 10 to 80 per cent charge taking 31 minutes.

1Range dependent on trim and optional equipment. All vehicles are tested according to WLTP technical procedures. Figures shown are official test values for comparability purposes; only compare fuel consumption, CO2 and electric range figures with other vehicles tested to the same technical procedures. These figures may not reflect real life driving results, which will depend upon a number of factors including but not limited to factory fitted options, accessories fitted (post-registration), variations in weather, road and traffic conditions, individual driving styles, vehicle load, vehicle condition, use of systems like climate control (and, for battery electric vehicles, the starting charge, age and conditions of the battery). Figures for battery electric vehicles were obtained after the battery had been fully charged. Battery electric vehicles require mains electricity for charging. Zero emissions while driving. Figures quoted are subject to change due to ongoing approvals/changes and figures may include options not available in the UK. Please consult your local Sytner Audi Centre for further information. Data correct in July 2023. Lithium-ion batteries, of the type used in most electric vehicles (including Audi electric vehicles) have a restricted lifespan. Battery capacity will reduce over time, with use and charging. Reduction in battery capacity will affect the performance of the vehicle, including the range achievable, and may impact resale value. New car performance figures (including battery capacity and range) may be provided for the purposes of comparison between vehicles. You should not rely on new car performance figures (including battery capacity and range), in relation to used vehicles with older batteries, as they will not reflect used vehicle performance in the real world. For further information on batteries and the Audi 8 year/100,000 mile battery warranty, please visit https://www.audi.co.uk/uk/web/en/electric/faqs/battery.html.

2Timings based on a 10 to 80% charge using an ultra-rapid DC public charge station at the vehicle’s maximum charging capability. Ultra rapid charging stations are still limited in the UK, with numbers planned to increase. Actual charging times will vary depending on various factors, including the selected vehicle (and battery option, if available), the type of charger used, the level of charge in the battery, the age type, condition and temperature of the charger and the battery, the power supply, ambient temperature at the point of use and other environmental factors. Charging times will also be affected by the charging curve (for example, once charging passes 80%, charging will slow to protect the battery's longevity) and will be longer if battery temperature activates safeguarding technology.
