Plug-in hybrids are a great stepping stone between conventional petrol and diesel engines and EVs, and the Audi Q3 TFSI e is a great showcase of this. When running on electricity, it’s impressively refined and quiet, while the engine provides scope for longer journeys without having to worry about stopping to charge. Its combination of quality, performance and efficiency really helps to set it apart in the hybrid SUV class.

Design

Audi’s first-ever plug-in hybrid compact SUV, the Q3 TFSI e is introduced to this highly competitive segment as a more efficient alternative to the petrol and diesel versions of this SUV that were already on sale.

Designed for those not quite ready to make the full switch to Audi’s electric Q4 e-tron, it continues to offer a spacious interior and the same smart styling that comes with all of Audi’s SUV line-up.

If you want a hybrid that doesn’t shout about its electrified elements, there’s a lot to be said about this Audi Q3 plug-in hybrid, as aside from a charging flap in the front wing and some ‘TFSI e’ badging, there’s next to nothing to set it apart from the regular Audi Q3.

But considering the Q3’s smart exterior design, that’s certainly no bad thing as this is a very smart-looking SUV. With its standard-fit LED headlights, Singleframe grille and sleek lines, it’s Audi design at its finest. Where style is concerned, it might be worth choosing a sportier-looking S line or Black Edition models, which get a racier look and larger alloy wheels.

Tech

Audi offers plenty of technology on the Audi Q3, and plenty of it is included across all models as well. As standard an excellent 10-inch ‘MMI Navigation Plus’ touchscreen is included, bringing elements such as Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone mirroring, along with a satellite navigation system with 3D mapping.

The hybrid element of the Q3 TFSI e also impresses, with its powertrain proving to be one of the most intelligent around because of how it's able to choose the right power source for optimal efficiency. It works even better when a route is programmed into the satellite navigation, too.

Engines & Performance

The Audi Q3 TFSI e uses a powertrain that’s found in the highly popular plug-in hybrid A3, and pairs a 148bhp 1.4-litre petrol engine with an electric motor for a combined output of 242bhp and 400Nm of torque – stats shared with the most powerful petrol Q3 (with the exception of the RS version).

A 13kWh high-voltage battery is also used, and this can be charged in three hours and 45 minutes using a home wallbox. In terms of the gearbox, a six-speed S tronic automatic gearbox is adopted, with this delivering drive to the front wheels.

Statistics

Providing the battery is charged, the Q3 TFSI e has plenty of performance, with 0-60mph taking 7.1 seconds, and capable of a top speed of 130mph, where permitted. Even when just running on electric, this Audi can travel up to 87mph before the engine kicks in.

Efficiency is likely a top priority with this hybrid Q3, however, and thanks to a claimed electric range of up to 31 miles, there’s scope for some very low running costs. Audi says you could see up to 176.6mpg, while CO2 emissions are low at 37g/km.
