Efficient yet powerful.

The all-new BMW X2 and the first-ever BMW iX2.

The introduction of the Sports Activity Coupé concept in the premium compact segment was pioneered by the BMW X2. Now, with its second generation, the BMW X2 reaffirms the company's leadership in this rapidly evolving market with even more distinct, sportier, and forward-thinking features.

The new BMW X2 boasts significantly increased dimensions, a prominent coupé-style design, and dynamic lines that vividly showcase its impressive development. The model's progressive nature extends to the fully electric BMW iX2 variant, an extensive array of driver assistance systems that facilitate automated driving and parking, and the innovative digital services provided by the latest BMW iDrive with QuickSelect and BMW Operating System 9.

The all-new BMW X2.

The new BMW X2 showcases a distinct, sporty exterior complemented by a modern cockpit design with digital innovations, like the BMW Curved Display, and a spacious interior. Its wider front and rear tracks, along with larger wheels, give it a broader and more muscular presence on the road.

Inside, the BMW X2 accommodates five full-size seats, offering increased shoulder and elbow room, with an extra 25mm of knee room in the rear seats.

The front-end design of the BMW X2 brings a sporty and visually striking appeal to the premium compact segment. It features a redesigned BMW kidney grille and twin headlights with an almost hexagonal contour. An optional illuminated BMW kidney grille, Iconic Glow, adds a distinctive touch.

The headlight units extend into the wheel arches and include standard LED headlights. Adaptive LED Headlights, offering various lighting patterns, are available in the Technology Pack.

The lower air intake is deeply integrated into the front end, flanked by elegant wing-shaped inlays that direct air to the air curtains in the front apron. The bonnet has a model-specific design with dynamic contours.

The unique proportions of the new BMW X2 become especially apparent from a side view. Its vertical front end, extended hood, steeply angled A-pillars, and a roofline that gracefully flows into the rear all contribute to the classic BMW Sports Activity Coupé silhouette. Additionally, large wheels and a continuous black trim at the lower body edge subtly emphasize its rugged character.

When observed from the rear, the flared wheel arches and muscular shoulders further define the character of the new BMW X2. The lines along the sides seamlessly extend towards the rear, creating a smooth transition between various body sections.

The first-ever BMW iX2.
The fully electric iX2 xDrive30 is set to inject new energy into eco-friendly premium transportation. Both the electric motors and the high-voltage battery in the new BMW iX2 xDrive30 are the results of cutting-edge fifth-generation BMW eDrive technology, which boasts exceptional efficiency. This technological advancement empowers the new BMW iX2 xDrive30 to achieve an impressive range of 259 to 266 miles in the WLTP cycle.

The latest iteration of the Max Performance Charging software included in the BMW iX2 enhances charging efficiency. It ensures a smoother decline in the charging rate as the high-voltage battery reaches a higher state of charge (SOC), eliminating the previous "stepped" charging curve and ultimately reducing charging times. This software also enables rapid charging from a higher starting SOC of up to 50 percent.

To extend the BMW iX2's range, drivers can activate a new drive system feature when using the Efficient My Mode setting. By employing the MAX RANGE function, power output and top speed are deliberately limited, and certain comfort features are scaled down, resulting in an extended range of up to 25 percent.

BMW’s technological expertise.

The BMW Group produces the highly efficient fuel cell systems for the pilot fleet at its in-house competence centre for hydrogen in Munich. This technology is one of the core elements in the BMW iX5 Hydrogen and generates a high continuous output of 125 kW/170 hp.

A chemical reaction takes place in the fuel cell between gaseous hydrogen from the tanks and oxygen from the air. Maintaining a steady supply of both elements to the fuel cell’s membrane is of crucial importance for the drive system’s efficiency. In addition to the technological equivalents of features found on combustion engines, such as charge air coolers, air filters, control units and sensors, the BMW Group also developed special hydrogen components for its new fuel cell system. These include the high-speed compressor with turbine and high-voltage coolant pump, for instance.

The BMW Group sources the individual fuel cells from the Toyota Motor Corporation. The two companies have enjoyed a partnership characterised by trust for many years and have been collaborating on fuel cell drive systems since 2013.

Fuel cell systems are manufactured in two main steps, based on the individual fuel cells. The cells are first assembled into a fuel cell stack. The next step involves fitting all the other components to produce a complete fuel cell system.

Stacking of the fuel cells is largely a fully automated process. Once the individual components have been inspected for any damage, the stack is compressed by machine with a force of five tonnes and placed in a housing. The stack housing is manufactured in the light metal foundry at BMW Group Plant Landshut using a sand casting technique.

For this, molten aluminium is poured into a mould made from compacted sand mixed with resin in a process specially designed for this small-series vehicle.

The pressure plate, which delivers hydrogen and oxygen to the fuel cell stack, is made from cast plastic parts and light-alloy castings, also from the Landshut plant. The pressure plate forms a gas-tight and water-tight seal around the stack housing.

Final assembly of the fuel cell stacks includes a voltage test along with extensive testing of the chemical reaction within the cells. Finally, all the different components are fitted together in the assembly area to produce the complete system.

During this system assembly stage, further components are fitted, such as the compressor, the anode and cathode of the fuel-cell system, the high-voltage coolant pump and the wiring harness.

In combination with a highly integrated drive unit using fifth-generation BMW eDrive technology (the electric motor, transmission and power electronics are grouped together in a compact housing) at the rear axle and a power battery with lithium-ion technology developed specially for this vehicle, the powertrain channels maximum output of 295kW / 401 hp onto the road. In coasting overrun and braking phases, the motor also serves as a generator, feeding energy back into a power battery.
