Mel Burrows, Marketing Executive, answers our Women in Business questions.
How long have you worked for Sytner BMW/MINI? 8 years
How long have you been in your current role? 3 years
What is your favourite part about your current role? I absolutely love working with the MINI brand there’s a lot of fun projects I get to work with most recently meeting Joe Wicks for the PE on Tour with the MINI Countryman and also Project Dog has been great fun and I get to bring to dog to work for photoshoots!
What motivates you in the morning? Knowing I get to work with a great team and a fun brand!
Three words to describe yourself? Ambitious, passionate & driven
What is your greatest achievement? My greatest achievement would be the progression I’ve had since joining Sytner Group, I originally started in the IT department where I was also at university part time studying Business & Marketing, my manager was really supportive when I decided I wanted to apply for a role within the BMW/MINI Marketing Team, from here I’ve managed to work my way up over the past 5 years from administrator to MINI Marketing Executive.
What advice would you give to someone aspiring to be in your role? Be organised and open minded, no day is ever the same and we often need to switch up what we’re doing last minute to take on a new task – but it’s all part of the fun.
How have you seen the Automotive industry landscape change and evolve to engage more women? I think people always assume the motor trade is still very male dominated but I work in an all-female team and there are a lot of women who work within the company – many of them in management roles, so if you’re female don’t let the stereotype put you off pursuing a career!
Top tip for how you organise your days? I always keep a list of tasks which I update every day to keep me on top of workload.
Top tip for working in the automotive industry? Be organised but also be prepared that no day is ever the same – it’s a very fast paced environment but there are a lot of opportunities and it is a great industry to be a part of.
