WHAT IS A HYBRID?
More and more people are choosing to switch from traditional petrol and diesel cars to hybrid and electric models - and with improved economy, low CO₂ emissions and lower running costs, it’s easy to see why.
As a pioneer in electric driving, BMW offers an extensive range of electrified cars across plug-in hybrid (PHEV) and pure electric formats.
A hybrid vehicle is any car that is driven by two power sources. In the case of BMW's Plug-in Hybrid models, this is achieved by the use of a small electric engine working in tandem with a petrol engine. The advantage to hybrid cars over conventional cars is that the same level of performance is delivered with lower running costs and reduced emissions. At the same time, hybrid cars offer the same excellent range and convenience of a model with a traditional engine.
The BMW Plug-in Hybrid range takes the best of BMW’s combustion engines, using renowned EfficientDynamics, and marries it to modern battery technology and an electric motor. The result is a BMW with two power sources, but more so, it’s a totally responsive drive.
STAY CHARGED.
With a continuously expanding public charging network and convenient home charging solutions, it’s easier than ever to make a plug-in hybrid work for you.
HOME CHARGING: The majority of our plug-in hybrid owners charge their car at home. All BMW Plug-in Hybrid models are equipped with our standard charging cable that is compatible with any domestic 3-pin power outlet. With charging cycles typically between 5-10 hours (0-100%) you can fully charge overnight or during work hours. For even faster charge times, a home-charging wallbox can be installed which can reduce charge cycles to less than 4 hours.
PUBLIC CHARGING: You can also take advantage of the continuously expanding charging network in the UK to stay charged whilst on the move. The BMW ChargeNow service, in partnership with BP Chargemaster, provides access to the largest network of charging stations in the UK, at over 7,000 locations nationwide.
BENEFITS.
There are many reasons why more people than ever are choosing to embrace the hybrid combination of petrol and electric power. Our Plug-in Hybrid models offer a range of environmental, financial and practical benefits.
EFFICIENCY AND EMISSIONS: All BMW Plug-in Hybrid models are classed as ‘ultra low emission vehicles’ with CO₂ emissions of less than 62 g/km and as low as 27 g/km for the X5 xDrive45e.
OWNERSHIP COSTS: Whether you are purchasing your car privately or through a company car scheme, the low CO₂ emissions of our plug-in hybrid range ensure that impressive savings can be made on your annual road tax or Benefit In Kind (BIK) company car tax.
THE BEST OF BOTH: A plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) has both a combustion engine and an electric motor. Each can operate on its own or combine together in perfect harmony.
STYLE AND SUBSTANCE: All BMW Plug-in Hybrid models can be ordered just like any traditional petrol and diesel equivalents, meaning that a wide range of model styles, colours and wheels can be selected, with only subtle references to its hybrid nature.
INTELLIGENT INNOVATIONS: A host of features and functions have been purposely developed for our BMW Plug-in Hybrid models.

TECHNOLOGY
Our electrified powertrains employ the very latest BMW eDrive technology to deliver exceptional performance, efficiency and versatility. A high output BMW TwinPower Turbo petrol engine works in harmony with a high voltage lithium-ion battery powering a BMW eDrive electric motor.
The combination of these three core components delivers a highly responsive drive with all the efficiency benefits of an electric powertrain. The petrol engine and electric motor can work together simultaneously or each independently so the car can be powered by either hybrid propulsion, petrol power or electric energy.
DRIVE MODES: Due to the flexible nature of the powertrain, various drive modes can be selected by the driver. 330e, 745e, 745Le xDrive, X5 xDrive45e and X3 xDrive30e models offer a convenient Battery Control function that allows you to set a specific charge level (between 30% - 100%) of the battery. The car is powered by the petrol engine until the required battery charge level is reached and maintained. This can be useful if you want to reserve sufficient electric charge for certain sections of your journey or simply want to boost your charge status without stopping. Further Drive Modes on these models include HYBRID, ELECTRIC and SPORT.
FOURTH GENERATION BATTERY TECHNOLOGY: From July 2019, all BMW Plug-in Hybrid models (excluding the BMW i8) employ our new, fourth generation battery technology that embodies the very latest advances in the field of battery cell innovation. Energy capacities have increased by up to 30% to deliver improvements to the pure electric range and greater overall efficiency.
