Electric Saloons

It’s a sign of the times that manufacturers haven’t gone headfirst into developing electric saloons, but instead focused on battery-powered compact and SUV-style models instead. As a result, saloon electric cars aren’t quite as commonplace, but there are still a number of options out there should you want one.

They tend to lean on the more luxurious end of the EV spectrum, with cars like the Mercedes EQE delivering that all-important electric powertrain alongside a healthy dose of comfort and style. Also from Mercedes is the elegant EQS, which takes all of the high-end features of the traditional S-Class but throws in a clever electric setup capable of delivering well over 300 miles of range.

BMW i4

BMW is quickly expanding its range of electric vehicles and the i4 is one of the latest to hit the scene. It’s essentially an electric version of the standard 4 Series, but with that all-important electric powertrain. It’s impressively long-legged, too, with certain models able to travel for up to 366 miles on a single charge. Inside, it’ll be familiar to anyone who has driven one of BMW’s more recent models, but it also gets the firm’s latest Operating System 8 which provides loads of functionality and seamless smartphone integration.

For those after a punchier option, then the range-topping M50 version is a good bet. It’s capable of doing 0-60mph in 3.7 seconds, so it’s more than quick enough to give some of BMW’s traditional ‘M’ models a run for their money.

Electric Mercedes-Benz Saloons

The Mercedes EQ range has grown to now include the EQE. Think of it as an electric alternative to the regular E-Class, which means it’s got a comfortable and spacious interior, loads of the latest technology and excellent refinement. In fact, to drive the EQE feels more like an S-Class thanks to its quiet cabin and wonderfully smooth ride quality.

It can travel for up to 380 miles on a single charge, too, which means that it’s more than up to the challenge of longer journeys. Thanks to a largely flat floor, the rear of the EQE delivers almost limousine-like levels of comfort and space, too, meaning you shouldn’t have too many complaints from those sitting in the back.

The Mercedes S-Class has always been seen as the luxury car to beat, and now the firm is looking to continue that in the electric era with its new EQS. Designed to be the EV equivalent of the S-Class, it offers a vast amount of space – particularly for those sitting in the rear – along with one of the best interiors in the business.

But the real trick up the EQS’ sleeve is its range, which is the most of any electric car on sale today, and by some margin. In fact, Mercedes claims a remarkable 453 miles from a charge, while particularly fast rapid charging means it takes just 31 minutes to replenish the battery from 10 to 80 per cent capacity.
